Frequently Asked Questions
What makes Akeela’s residential programs different?
We’ve served Alaskans for nearly 50 years with programs built around local needs, not templates. Our team includes professionals who live and work in the same communities as the people they support. Many of our staff have completed treatment here themselves.
Who is a good fit for residential treatment at Akeela?
Adults facing substance use or mental health challenges who need a safe, structured place to recover. This includes people with co-occurring disorders, those stepping up from outpatient care, or those needing help after a relapse.
What types of therapy does Akeela offer in residential treatment?
Clients take part in individual therapy, group sessions, skill-building, and trauma-informed care. Some also receive medication support, family counseling, or psychiatric services based on clinical need.
Why choose Akeela for inpatient treatment?
We offer a full range of services, a deep connection to Alaska’s communities, and a history of helping people move forward. Clients receive steady support, realistic tools & care that continues after discharge.
What’s the difference between residential and outpatient care?
Residential treatment means living on-site with 24-hour support and a full daily schedule. Outpatient care allows people to live elsewhere and attend scheduled sessions a few times a week.
How long do most people stay in Akeela’s residential program?
Most stays last between 30 and 90 days. Some clients stay longer, depending on progress, clinical needs & aftercare plans.
Can I leave the program whenever I want?
Participation in treatment is voluntary, but we encourage clients to talk with their care team before making any decisions about leaving early.
Does residential treatment actually help people recover?
Yes. Many people who complete residential treatment go on to maintain long-term recovery. Success depends on multiple factors, including continued support, follow-up care & personal effort after discharge.
Is Akeela’s residential treatment covered by insurance?
We accept Medicaid and most major insurance plans. We also serve uninsured clients through grant funding and state-supported programs.
Does Akeela offer long-term residential care?
Yes. While some programs are short-term, others allow for longer stays when clinically appropriate. Each treatment plan is built around what the person needs—not a preset length.
Where are Akeela’s residential treatment programs located?
We offer residential services in Anchorage. Clients from all across Alaska come here to receive care, stay on-site, and access wraparound support.
What happens after residential treatment ends?
Clients work with staff to plan next steps before leaving. This might include outpatient therapy, sober living, housing support, or continued case management. Recovery doesn’t end at discharge—support continues.
Can I stay in touch with people I meet in treatment?
Many clients form strong connections in residential care. Peer support can continue through alumni groups, outpatient programs & community recovery networks.
What should I bring with me to residential treatment?
We recommend bringing clothes, basic toiletries (non-alcohol based), any prescribed medications, and identification. Once admitted, staff will provide a full list and help you get settled.
